6th Street Bridge
The Sixth Street Viaduct, also known as the Sixth Street Bridge, is a significant structure in Los Angeles, measuring 3,500 feet in length. It serves as a vital connection between the historic Boyle Heights neighborhood on the east side and the downtown Arts District on the west side. The bridge efficiently spans several critical transportation routes, including the Los Angeles River, the Santa Ana Freeway (US 101), and the Golden State Freeway (I-5).
In addition to roadways, the bridge accommodates various rail services. It crosses tracks for Metrolink (particularly the Orange County and 91/Perris Valley lines), Amtrak (including the Pacific Surfliner and Southwest Chief), and Union Pacific railroads, along with Metrolink's Riverside Line. The bridge also interacts with several local streets, enhancing connectivity in the urban landscape.
The original bridge opened in 1932 and was demolished in 2016. It was replaced by a new structure that opened in 2022, modernizing this essential thoroughfare while preserving its historical significance.
