Corpus Christi US 181 Harbor Drive

The Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge serves as a critical transportation link in Corpus Christi, Texas. This through arch bridge facilitates six lanes of both U.S. Route 181 and Texas State Highway 35, connecting downtown Corpus Christi to North Beach. With its position spanning the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, the current bridge accommodates approximately 26,000 vehicles each day.

In response to the growing demands of maritime and land traffic, a new bridge, known as the New Harbor Bridge, is currently under construction. The design of the New Harbor Bridge as a cable-stayed structure marks a significant upgrade. Comprising twin precast concrete delta frame segmental box girders, this bridge will stretch 1,661 feet across the ship channel, providing a clearance of 205 feet above the water.

The innovative cable-stayed design features parallel cables arranged in a fan pattern over a mixed-use deck that is 134 feet wide. This configuration will support six lanes of vehicular traffic while also incorporating a designated bicycle and pedestrian path. Additionally, a mid-span belvedere will offer views of the Corpus Christi Bay. The approach segments of the new bridge will maintain a similar box girder design, supported by columns spaced 180 feet apart, enhancing both structural integrity and traffic flow in the region.
