Gerald Desmond Bridge

The Long Beach International Gateway, also referred to as the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement, is a vital infrastructure project designed to enhance transportation efficiency in the Long Beach area. This cable-stayed bridge not only facilitates the movement of vehicular traffic across six lanes of Interstate 710 but also includes dedicated pathways for bicycles and pedestrians.

Spanning the Back Channel, it connects the city of Long Beach to Terminal Island, promoting accessibility and facilitating economic activity in the region.

The design and construction of the bridge incorporated advanced engineering techniques, ensuring durability and sustainability while addressing the growing demands of local and regional transportation networks.

The bridge replaced the older Gerald Desmond Bridge, which was completed in 1968 and named after Gerald Desmond, a prominent civic leader and a former city attorney for the City of Long Beach.

The new bridge allows access to the port for taller container ships following the demolition of the older bridge. Additionally, it is the first long-span cable-stayed bridge in California and the first and only cable-stayed bridge in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
