San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge

The East Tie-In bypass structure played a crucial role in maintaining traffic flow during the construction of the Yerba Buena Island Transition component of the New East Span bridge replacement project. Supported temporarily by 200-foot steel towers, this structure facilitated the connection between the existing double-deck configuration of the Yerba Buena Island tunnel and the new bridge.

The installation of the 3,600-ton double-deck steel truss for the East Tie-In was a significant operation, executed 150 feet above ground. To accomplish this, workers utilized a skid bent system to remove a 300-foot-long section of the former Bay Bridge, effectively rolling the old truss span out of the construction zone. Once the new span was successfully positioned, traffic was redirected onto the detour structure, ensuring minimal disruption for motorists during the transition.
